Manny Ramirez out with sore leg

Manny Ramirez’s pursuit of his 500th home run will have to wait for at least another day.

Ramirez, who has 497 career homers, was given Sunday night off against the Minnesota Twins because of a sore right hamstring.

Manager Terry Francona said he saw Ramirez come up a little gimpy while running out a grounder in Saturday night’s 5-2 victory over the Twins. Ramirez called Francona on Sunday morning and told him the leg was a little sore.

Padres acquire Corey from Red Sox, demote Thatcher

The San Diego Padres acquired right-handed reliever Bryan Corey from the Boston Red Sox on Sunday for a player to be named or cash.

To make room on the roster, the Padres optioned left-hander Joe Thatcher to Triple-A Portland.

Corey was outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket on April 30 by the Red Sox. He had a 10.50 ERA in seven relief appearances during two stints with the Red Sox this season. The 34-year-old appeared in five games in relief over two stints with Triple-A Pawtucket, with one save.

Red Sox use long ball to down Twins

Has Daisuke Matsuzaka’s mythical gyroball finally made an appearance stateside?

The Japanese right-hander had a pitch slip out of his hand in the third inning and land about five feet from the mound before rolling to the plate, one of the few things he did wrong in Boston’s 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night.

“That’s that gyroball,” manager Terry Francona cracked. “It’s finally emerged. That was interesting.

Colon allows 1 run in 3 innings in minor league start

Red Sox pitcher Bartolo Colon allowed one run and four hits in three innings during a rehab start Saturday night for Triple-A Pawtucket.

The 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner, who signed a minor league deal with Boston during the offseason, threw 36 of 49 pitches for strikes and topped out at 94 mph.

Colon strained his right oblique muscle and was placed on the disabled list April 7, a setback in his attempt to return to the big leagues with the Red Sox.

    Red Sox 0, Twins 0(1)

Boston Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo was expected to miss Saturday night’s game against Minnesota with what manager Terry Francona said is likely a mild concussion, while Twins infielder Nick Punto was headed to the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

Lugo was injured Friday night when he collided with Matt Tolbert while sliding into second base. Jed Lowrie got the start in his place.

“He felt a little woozy this morning,” Francona said.

Twins stun Red Sox with late rally

Struggling Mike Lamb lifted the Minnesota Twins past the Boston Red Sox 7-6 on Friday night with a two-run single in the ninth inning against Jonathan Papelbon, who blew his second straight save opportunity.

Delmon Young led off the ninth with a single, and he advanced on a sacrifice by Matt Tolbert. Adam Everett popped out, Young stole third without a throw, and Carlos Gomez walked and moved up on a steal.

Beckett has no problems vs. Tigers

In a matchup of hard-throwing right-handers, Boston’s Josh Beckett got the best of Detroit’s struggling ace, Justin Verlander. And Beckett reached a milestone along the way, too.

Beckett had eight strikeouts, including the 1,000th of his career, to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 5-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Beckett (4-2) gave up six hits and a run in seven innings.

“I thought we had good at-bats off Beckett. I thought we battled him hard,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.
